Prominent Republican Politician SWITCHES To Democrat Party

Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan has officially switched his political affiliation from Republican to Democrat, citing deep disagreements with the GOP’s policies and direction. In an op-ed published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Duncan explained that his decision stemmed from issues like tax cuts, health care, and immigration. He emphasized that stepping away from the Republican Party has helped him live more in line with his values, stating, “Loving my neighbor is easier now.”

Duncan noted that his departure from the GOP began well before Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. On social media, he revealed that his shift was a result of a personal struggle — trying to reconcile his Republican identity with his desire to treat others with compassion and fairness.

Earlier this year, the Georgia Republican Party expelled Duncan, accusing him of betraying the party by endorsing President Joe Biden and, later, Vice President Kamala Harris. According to the party, this was a violation of his loyalty to the GOP. Duncan brushed off the expulsion, criticizing the party’s priorities and calling it another “dumpster fire” instead of a moment to refocus.

Duncan has remained an outspoken critic of Donald Trump and even appeared at the Democratic National Convention, further distancing himself from the Republican mainstream. In response, Georgia GOP chair Josh McKoon accused Duncan of aligning with the “extreme elements” of the Democratic Party and claimed he had fully abandoned conservative principles.

Despite the backlash, Duncan insists his core values haven’t changed. He believes he’s aligning with a broader base of Americans who are tired of chaos and division. Now, as a Democrat, he is openly considering a return to public office in 2026. He says he’s received encouragement from across the political spectrum — Democrats, independents, and “common-sense Republicans” — to consider a run.

Duncan says he’s open to the possibility. If Georgia voters are looking for a leader who wants to make a real difference, build coalitions, and focus on results rather than drama, he believes he could be the right choice.
