JD Vance Reveals John Bolton Investigation Is Only Partially About Classified Documents

Vice President J.D. Vance confirmed that the federal investigation into former National Security Advisor John Bolton involves more than just classified documents. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Vance acknowledged that hidden files are a key part of the probe but stressed that investigators are also examining broader concerns about Bolton’s actions—indicating a wider scope to the inquiry.

Vance made it clear the Justice Department is proceeding on legal merit, not politics. “Classified documents are certainly part of it,” he said, adding, “They’re going to look into it. If there’s no crime here, we’re not going to prosecute it.” His remarks push back against criticism framing the investigation as political payback, particularly coming from Senator Adam Schiff, who called it “retribution” against dissenters.

The FBI’s search of Bolton’s home and office on August 22, 2025, was part of a court-approved effort tied to national security concerns—but Vance and others have made a point of denying any political motivation. Trump himself distanced himself from the action, claiming he saw it on television and was not briefed beforehand.

Nonetheless, conservative allies publicly cheered the raid. FBI Director Kash Patel posted “NO ONE is above the law” on social media, echoed by Attorney General Pam Bondi. The move was heralded in MAGA circles as a sign that even high-profile critics are not immune to scrutiny.
