Backlash Emerges After Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Leads Christian Prayer Service at Pentagon

A recent prayer event held at the Pentagon has stirred debate after it was led by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The gathering, centered around Christian themes, has drawn mixed reactions from various circles.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ignited a wave of public backlash and constitutional debate after leading a Christian prayer service at the Pentagon, an event he says will now take place monthly on a voluntary basis. The 30-minute gathering, held alongside his personal pastor Brooks Potteiger, has sparked a fierce discussion about the line between religious expression and government endorsement.
Critics, including legal scholars and former Pentagon officials, argue that the event may violate the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, which prohibits government institutions from promoting or endorsing religion. Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Rachel VanLandingham voiced concerns to CNN, saying that Hegseth’s official association with the event could constitute a constitutional breach. A former Pentagon legal advisor went further, calling the event “incredibly problematic” due to its overt religious symbolism tied to an official federal agency.
In response to the controversy, Hegseth forcefully defended his decision, stating that the prayer service reflects a deep-rooted tradition within the U.S. military. “Appealing to Heaven, to God—it’s a longstanding tradition in our military. I’m very proud of starting a monthly voluntary service at the Pentagon,” he said, according to The Daily Caller. He drew historical comparisons, referencing George Washington praying with soldiers during the Revolutionary War, and emphasized the spiritual needs of service members tasked with dangerous missions, such as those in the 82nd Airborne Division.
“I appeal to Jesus Christ for that protection, to speak that word and be open and willing to talk about that at the Pentagon. If they want to criticize that, they’re on the wrong side of a very important issue,” Hegseth added. His message struck a chord with many in attendance; the event reportedly drew a standing-room-only crowd, indicating substantial interest and support among some military personnel.
The sermon delivered by Pastor Potteiger, based on the book of Matthew, focused on the sovereignty of God. Potteiger leads a congregation affiliated with the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches, a denomination known for its conservative theological stance, further fueling debate over the nature and tone of religious expression endorsed in a government setting.
While the U.S. military has historically included chaplains and religious services to support the faith needs of personnel, Hegseth’s direct leadership and promotion of a Christian service from a senior government platform has amplified concerns. Opponents argue that such high-level religious endorsement could undermine religious neutrality, alienating non-Christian service members or those who prefer secular representation in military affairs.
Despite the criticism, Hegseth remains unapologetic and has framed the prayer service as part of a broader effort to restore faith-based values within the armed forces. His comments came during a broader public appearance that included a visit to Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he honored the 82nd Airborne Division and announced a hazard pay increase for paratroopers, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to those serving in high-risk roles.
The controversy surrounding the Pentagon prayer service reflects deeper national tensions over religion’s role in public life, particularly within government institutions. As Hegseth moves forward with plans for regular services, and as watchdog groups weigh possible legal challenges, the debate over the balance between faith, freedom, and the Constitution is likely to intensify in both political and military circles.
