Pope Leo XIV Will Soon Receive a Gold Ring, a Bulletproof Car and a Lavish Home

Pope Leo XIV is set to receive a series of traditional and ceremonial gifts following his rise to the papacy. Among them are items symbolizing both his spiritual authority and the Vatican’s emphasis on security and tradition.
Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, is preparing to step into a new phase of his papacy—one that stands in sharp contrast to his modest roots and decades of mission work. As he settles into his role as the new leader of the Catholic Church, he is set to receive several gifts steeped in tradition, but layered in luxury.
Among these is the historic Fisherman’s Ring, a 24-karat gold band worth over half a million dollars, engraved with his papal name and an image of Saint Peter. The ring is just one part of the ornate welcome extended to a new pope, which also includes access to lavish living quarters in the Apostolic Palace and a stunning countryside retreat at Castel Gandolfo, perched above Lake Albano. Both residences offer sweeping views, deep history, and all the comforts fit for a spiritual monarch—though Pope Leo XIV hasn’t yet announced where he’ll live.
Adding to this mix of ceremony and modern convenience, Pope Leo will receive a custom-built, electric white Mercedes-Benz Popemobile valued at roughly $500,000. The vehicle is both bulletproof and symbolic of the evolving intersection between religious authority and high-tech security.
The lifestyle now available to him marks a dramatic shift from his early years in the working-class neighborhoods of Chicago and his later missionary service in rural Peru, where he often lived among the poor. That stark contrast has drawn attention—especially given that his predecessor, Pope Francis, was known for his commitment to humility and his choice to live in a modest guesthouse rather than the grand papal apartments.
While Pope Francis converted the Castel Gandolfo estate into a public museum, Pope Leo XIV appears less inclined to follow the same austere path. He has not ruled out using the opulent residence, hinting that he may embrace the full scope of what comes with the papacy, even while continuing to speak out on issues of poverty and injustice.
Inside the Vatican, discussions continue over how future popes might approach the balance between tradition and simplicity. Whether Pope Leo XIV will lean fully into the luxurious aspects of the role or seek a more understated approach remains to be seen.
Still, his journey—from the suburbs of Chicago to the most powerful office in the Catholic Church—reflects both a personal transformation and a broader shift within the Church itself. As he officially begins his tenure, Pope Leo XIV’s leadership will be shaped not only by faith, but also by how he chooses to navigate the tension between sacred tradition and modern-day expectation.
