Republican Senator Resigns After Being Diagnosed With Alzheimers

South Carolina Republican State Senator Roger Nutt, representing portions of Spartanburg and Greenville counties, announced his resignation after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The 60-year-old lawmaker revealed in a statement that sympathetic symptoms he initially attributed to long COVID were ultimately diagnosed as Alzheimer’s. His resignation is effective January 5, 2026, per officially submitted paperwork.

A proud father of three, Nutt previously served a decade on the Spartanburg County Council before winning a seat in the State House in 2020. Just last year, he advanced to the State Senate after a hard-fought GOP primary opposed to long-time GOP establishment names.

In his letter to Senate President Thomas Alexander, Senator Nutt expressed heartfelt gratitude for his time in public service and a deep faith that will sustain him and his family through the difficult journey ahead. He described his years in the chamber as “a dream come true” and urged constituents to trust that the best interests of the district will continue to be served.

Nutt’s resignation triggers a special election to fill his seat. Representative Bobby Cox, a fellow Republican from Greer, has already announced his candidacy. In a coordinated move, Cox also submitted his resignation from the State House to allow both elections to occur simultaneously — saving local taxpayers money and avoiding long gaps in representation.

State Senate President Alexander released a statement expressing deep sadness upon learning of Nutt’s illness and resignation. He praised Nutt’s work ethic, sharp knowledge, and steadfast dedication to the people of his district.
