Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stood on the Senate floor today and announced that the SAVE Act — legislation aimed at requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections — has no chance of becoming law. The bill, which needs 60 votes to advance, will not receive a single Democratic vote, according to Schumer.

He accused Republicans of trying to manipulate the electoral process, claiming the SAVE Act and President Trump’s recent executive orders represent a coordinated effort to “put our elections in a vice grip.” Schumer described the legislation as “destructive” and likened it to a modern version of Jim Crow laws.

“Donald Trump and Republicans are putting our elections in a vice grip — executive orders from the president on one end, and dangerous legislation from Congress on the other,” Schumer said. Schumer argued that the bill would end accessible registration methods like online applications, mail-in registration, and community registration drives. He also warned it could lead to sweeping voter roll purges, potentially disenfranchising legal American voters.

“It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections,” Schumer said, dismissing the SAVE Act as a thinly veiled voter suppression tactic. “This bill is not about election security — it’s about rigging the game.”

He concluded his remarks with a firm declaration: “The SAVE Act is dead on arrival.”

The announcement drew immediate backlash, including from some public figures. Golf legend Phil Mickelson responded sharply on social media, calling Schumer a “traitor” and accusing him of abandoning the principles of fair and transparent elections.
